Foreign varsity set to admit pre-med students

Xavier University, a Caribbean medical institution in Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles, Central America, is set to admit Nigerian students who crave foreign medical education.
The university, which partners with South Western University, Cebu University, and Cagayan University, all in the Philippines, is set to commence pre-medical training programmes in Nigeria.
On completion, successful students would continue their education in either the parent university in Bonaire or any of its affiliates in the Philippines.
At a briefing last Monday at the Excellence Hotel, Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos President of the university, Mr Xaju Bhaskar, said the institution through the initiative, targets about 50 study centres in over 25 countries before the year ends.
Bhaskar said the centres will serve as a training ground for more medical personnel seeking greener pastures in countries such as the US or Canada.
Explaining the rationale behind citing a study centre in Nigeria, Bhaskar said it was to make it less expensive for students as the programme would cost more if done abroad.
Provisional admission letters, Bhaskar stressed, would be provided by Xavier University to successful students undergoing the pre-medical training in Nigeria. The letters, according to him, "will guarantee their entry into the university upon completion of pre-medical and foundation in health sciences."
The 12-month pre-med training is split into three semesters. Afterwards, successful students would complete two other stages –Pre-Clinical and Clinical training overseas in their choice programmes including Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Radiology Technology as well as Medical Laboratory Technology.
On pre-entry qualification, he said prospective students should have five credits- English, Mathematics and the mandatory science subjects- Physics, Chemistry and Biology. This, he further explained, would be preceded be a pre-screening test after such students must have procured the university’s entry forms.
Bhaskar explained that Xavier University adopts strict guidelines before an approval is made for its study centre. Outlining the conditions, he said a centre should have adequate infrastructural facilities; be owned by a well- established institution, trust or society; be operated by a person with good experience in handling a school or college; and must be able to provide uninterrupted services daring the course, among others.
He said after inspection of some select institutions across the country, Taidob College, Asero Estate in Abeokuta, met the criteria, and has been given provisional approval by Xavier University, as its pioneer study centre in Nigeria.
The Proprietor, Taidob College, Dr Abayomi Oluwatosin Jiboku, thanked the university team, whom he said was impressed at the facilities in the college which he founded some 16 years ago.
He also said the programme should take-off with about 30 or 40 students in January next year. Also speaking, Mr Praise Folaji, Regional Representative, Xavier University, described the initiative as ‘interventionist’, noting: "It’s not all about money-making, we are also helping to bridge the admission gap in Nigeria. Many of these students are frustrated year- in –year- out because the carrying capacity of our tertiary institutions is less than the number of candidates who apply for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) every year."
