The PMP qualification is awarded by the Project Management Institute USA and is the best known internationally accepted Project Management qualification.

OVERVIEW OF APPLICATION:

Qualification as a Project Management Professional (PMP) requires fulfillment of the following:

PREREQUISITES FOR ENTRANCE TO THE EXAMINATION

1. The candidate must complete a 40 hour project management course with a Project Management Institute registered provider.

2. ACADEMIC QUALIFICATION:

The candidate must follow one of two routes/categories, based upon academic qualification, and must support their application with curriculum vitae and experience verification forms having minimum requirements for project management experience::

You select which of the following categories you fall into:

Category I:
The candidate holds a baccalaureate/equivalent university degree.

Category II:
The candidate does not hold the above but holds a high school
diploma/equivalent secondary school credential.

3. EXPERIENCE
Experience is evaluated by means of the submission of:

A) general curriculum vitae.
B) Experience verification forms setting out the hours of experience gained in the various process groups. Each project to be set out on a separate verification form and must fall within the eligible time frame.

Category I requires 4500 hours of project management experience gained during the past six years. This must be represented by 36 non-overlapping months of practical experience.

Category II requires 7500 hours of project management experience gained during the past eight years. This must be represented by 60 non-overlapping months of practical experience.

4. EXAMINATION
A four hour exam must be taken at a registered prometric examination station. This can be done in South Africa.

The exam requires the candidate to answer 200 multiple choice questions on the project management knowledge areas.

The candidate is required to pass the exam. The pass mark depends upon a panel of assessors.

5. CODE OF CONDUCT
Each candidate is required to commit to the PMP Code of Professional Conduct.

6. THE APPLICATION PROCESS (EXECUTIVE EDUCATION WILL ASSIST AS PART OF THE MENTORING SERVICE)
The application, which has to be in English, has to be sent by post to the PMI Head Office in the USA...

The application must include:

· The examination application.

· Completed and signed Verification Forms detailing project management experience gained on each relevant project.

· A current cv/resume detailing work experience and educational background.

· The appropriate fee.

Signature and initialing of the application form confirms that the candidate is fully familiar with PMI terms and conditions.

The PMI will advise the candidate of its acceptance to take the exam by means of an eligibility letter which will be mailed to the candidate by PMI within 10-14 working days of receipt of the application. The eligibility letter will provide complete details for scheduling an examination.

Eligibility to take the exam lasts for a period of six months from the date of acceptance.

The exam will be arranged at an accredited electronic examination center. The exam requires completion of 200 multiple choice questions, and four hours are allowed.

From the above it can be estimated that from the date of the candidate putting the application into the mail it could take six or so weeks before the eligibility letter is received back.

7. MAINTENANCE OF PMP STATUS:
In order to maintain PMP certification, PMP’s are required to attain no less than 60 Professional Development Units (PDU’s) within a three year cycle and must agree to adhere to the PMI Professional Code of Conduct.

All PMP’s receive the Professional Development Program Handbook once certification is attained.
