Foreign varsity set to admit pre-med students
Xavier University, a Caribbean medical institution in Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles, Central America, is set to admit Nigerian students who crave foreign medical education.
The university, which partners with South Western University, Cebu University, and Cagayan University, all in the Philippines, is set to commence pre-medical training programmes in Nigeria.
On completion, successful students would continue their education in either the parent university in Bonaire or any of its affiliates in the Philippines.
At a briefing last Monday at the Excellence Hotel, Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos President of the university, Mr Xaju Bhaskar, said the institution through the initiative, targets about 50 study centres in over 25 countries before the year ends.
Bhaskar said the centres will serve as a training ground for more medical personnel seeking greener pastures in countries such as the US or Canada.
Explaining the rationale behind citing a study centre in Nigeria, Bhaskar said it was to make it less expensive for students as the programme would cost more if done abroad.
Provisional admission letters, Bhaskar stressed, would be provided by Xavier University to successful students undergoing the pre-medical training in Nigeria. The letters, according to him, "will guarantee their entry into the university upon completion of pre-medical and foundation in health sciences."
The 12-month pre-med training is split into three semesters. Afterwards, successful students would complete two other stages –Pre-Clinical and Clinical training overseas in their choice programmes including Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Radiology Technology as well as Medical Laboratory Technology.
On pre-entry qualification, he said prospective students should have five credits- English, Mathematics and the mandatory science subjects- Physics, Chemistry and Biology. This, he further explained, would be preceded be a pre-screening test after such students must have procured the university’s entry forms.
Bhaskar explained that Xavier University adopts strict guidelines before an approval is made for its study centre. Outlining the conditions, he said a centre should have adequate infrastructural facilities; be owned by a well- established institution, trust or society; be operated by a person with good experience in handling a school or college; and must be able to provide uninterrupted services daring the course, among others.
He said after inspection of some select institutions across the country, Taidob College, Asero Estate in Abeokuta, met the criteria, and has been given provisional approval by Xavier University, as its pioneer study centre in Nigeria.
The Proprietor, Taidob College, Dr Abayomi Oluwatosin Jiboku, thanked the university team, whom he said was impressed at the facilities in the college which he founded some 16 years ago.
He also said the programme should take-off with about 30 or 40 students in January next year. Also speaking, Mr Praise Folaji, Regional Representative, Xavier University, described the initiative as ‘interventionist’, noting: "It’s not all about money-making, we are also helping to bridge the admission gap in Nigeria. Many of these students are frustrated year- in –year- out because the carrying capacity of our tertiary institutions is less than the number of candidates who apply for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) every year."

Xavier Varsity Gets Study Centre
Lagos — Xavier University School of Medicine, Bonaire, located in the Netherlands Antilles has concluded plans to establish its first study centre in Nigeria to provide quality pre-medical education to students at a lower cost.
The university has granted provisional approval to Taidob College, Abeokuta, Ogun State for this purpose. The arrangement was that at the end of the 16-month pre-medical and foundation in Health Science programmes at the study centre, the students would have been adequately prepared to proceed to Xavier University or its partner universities in Philippines to complete their Medicine in Doctor/MBBS and other associated medical courses.
Thus, representatives of the university, led by its Vice-President, Mr. Saju Bhaskar and the Regional Representative, Mr. Praise Folaji were in the country to inspect facilities at the school.
Briefing newsmen in Lagos on Monday, Bhaskar said the university was one of the few Caribbean medical schools which members of Board of Trustees are primarily US physicians and which has study centres worldwide for various programmes like pre-medical education, MBA among others. "The plan of the university is to have around 50 study centres in over 25 countries by end of 2010."
He said the pre-medical training programme was aimed at creating adequate number of doctors by delivering affordable international education. "After various research, trial and error, the university narrowed down to Philippines as the best destination for medical or health care education for students from Asia, Africa and Middle East."
According to him, Philippines education system was a replication of the United States, as it has been the territory of US for 50 years, saying that the university had developed a customised programme for international students, enabling them to complete their medical programme in less than five-six years.
Commercially, Bhaskar said it would be less to the students as they study at their home country for the pre medical training and further move to complete the course. "While undergoing the training in Nigeria, provisional admission letter will be issued by the university to all students to guarantee their entry into the university upon completion of pre-medical and foundation in health sciences."
According to him a study centre should ensure effective delivery of programme and to provide learning support services. It must be operated by persons with good experience in handling school or college level teaching; it should be hosted by a well established institution, trust, society or company; the study centre must have adequate faculty and facilities; the centre is liable to provide its services to the candidates throughout the course duration, among other qualities.
Proprietor of the college, Dr. Abayomi Jiboku said the college applied to the university to serve as its centre because it has the facilities required to run the programme.
He said the programme would help to provide access to candidates who could not secure admission into Nigerian universities and would save them the time and cost of running the programme abroad.

Xavier varsity set to train Nigerians in Medicine
To give qualitative medical education to youths, Xavier University, Bonaire in the Netherlands Antilles, Central America, has unveiled its Pre-Medical or Foundation programmes in Health Sciences, aimed at producing more Medical Doctors for the nation.
The university is partnering with the TAIDOB College, a post-primary school, located in Asero, a suburb of Abeokuta, capital of Ogun State for the establishment of the study centre for the programme in the country.
Expressing the preparedness of the university to deliver qualitative tuition, Mr. Xaju Bhaskar, the Vice President, International Affairs of the university said the academic curriculum of the institution would be in line with what is obtained in the United States of America (USA).
He said that the mission of the university was to train more Nigerians in Health Sciences education, saying this would enable the country to meet the challenge of shortage of medical personnels in the country.
His words: “The situation in the country today shows that many citizens of this country are interested in studying Medicine but the number of universities available could not meet their demands. That is why we have decided to create this opportunity for them to spend about two year Pre-Medical degree programme in the country.
“After their Pre-Medical degree programmes in the country, they would proceed to Philippine for their medical and clinical programmes. Those who are trained would add value to the nation’s health care delivery system.
On the choice of Philippine for their Medical and Clinical programmes, Bhaskar recalled that the country operates the same education curriculum like USA, saying Philippine remains the only country that was ruled by the Americans in history.
He said that recent statistics show that in the next five years, USA would have a shortage of about 1.2 million nurses, as he noted that developing countries like Indian, Argentina, Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia and other Sub-Sahara African countries are facing more challenges in their health care delivery.
“After 200 years of Spanish rule, Philippine was governed by the USA. It shares the same education curriculum with the USA. For those who complete their Pre-Medical degree programme, they would travel to Philippine where they would be trained in some of the best medical hospitals in the country for at least three years.”
On the preparedness of TAIDOB College facilities to meet the need of the students, Dr. Abayomi Oluwatosin Jibodu, the Chairman and Proprietor, TAIDOB College attested to the quality facilities, saying the school has equipped its Physics, Chemistry and Biology laboratories to the the challenges
He said that the school located in serene and congenial environment would afford medical students opportunity to begin their foundation programme without any detraction, saying the school also had a standard hospital with male and female wards under the supervision of Nurses and visiting Medical Doctors.
Jibodu said that the college has 1,000-seat Auditorium , noting that this would enable them to host seminars, conferences and workshops as well as give them opportunity to meet under one roof.
